Scholastic: March Results


Brayden Zarefsky tops Open section in a surprise upset! Brayden stepped up the challenge in playing up a section to fill a small group. Not expecting much but the challenge, he was able to outshine a couple of higher rated opponents.

Siddartha Potukuchi swept the Under 1200 section with a perfect score of 4-0.
The Under 600 section had a four-way tie among Neil Thattil, Ashreeya Shrestha, Kyra Zhang, and Victor Yi.
Jiuxi Zhu won the under 400 section in his first ever USCF rated tournament.

Spring is Here!

Time to add a little “spring” into your chess activities this quarter by joining not one, but two (or three!) of our tournaments this April. Below is a list of our regular tournaments.

We are also planning special events this coming quarter so keep a look out for announcements on our site or join our mailing list.

1. Wednesday Knights:

When: Wednesdays, April 3, 10, 17,  and 24 starting at 7:30 PM
What: One USCF-rated game per day.

To register, email us at chesspalace2000(@)yahoo.com and pay on site.

The Details: All players will be in one section paired using the Swiss-pairing system. Time control for each player, for each round, is 30 moves/90 minutes + sudden death 30 minutes ( 5-second delay starting move one).

Entry fee for the tournament is $27/month for regular attendee ($30 for non-members +$5 for first time club player). Yearly members get additional discounts! Inquire with staff for more info.

Also, chess players are welcome to play for one or two rounds only if they’re not able to make it for the whole month. Please email us at chesspalace2000 (@) yahoo.com  (subject: Wednesday Knights) for more info.

2. Saturday Open

When: Saturdays, April 6, 13, 20, or 27 with 1st round starting at 11:30 AM
What: Three USCF-rated game per day, every Saturday

The Details: Three-round USCF-rated chess tournament Round 1 starting at 11:30 AM. Players will be grouped based on ratings. 30 moves/90 minut​es, then sudden death 30 minutes, with 5-second delay.

Entry fee is $27 for regular attendee ($30 for non-members + $5 for first-time club player). Yearly members receive additional discounts. Inquire onsite.

3. Scholastic Tournament

When: Sunday, April 28
What: Open to all grades Kindergarten to 12th grade. Practice and play USCF rated games.

The Details: Four sections

  1. K-12th grade Open rating 1200 and above(3 rounds)
  2. K-12th grade rated Under 1200 (4 rounds)
  3. K-6th grade rated under 600 (4 rounds)
  4. K-6th grade U400 (4 rounds)

Rounds 1 starts 11:30 AM with awards estimated at around 4:30 pm.

Time control: Game 60 minutes in K-12th Open section, and Game 30 minutes in all other sections.

Entry Fee: $35 ($40 onsite)  Pre-register online to save!

Lunch is available for an additional $5 (pizza, chips, and juice).

We’re one week away from our February Scholastic tournament. Don’t miss out and sign up your child!

The Details:

Open to all grades Kindergarten to 12th grade, this tournament is a great way to start playing chess competitively.

This month’s tournament is on Sunday, February 24, 2019.

K-12th grade rated Under 1200 (4 rounds)

Scholastic: January Results

Nicholas Scarda clinched first place on tie-breaks at Chess Palace’s first scholastic tournament for 2019. Starting at 6th seed, Scarda topped the open section by beating two higher rated opponents and drawing his last game to co-Champion Maxwell Chu.

A total of 44 players in four sections competed.

First place finishers for the sections are:
1. Open: Nicholas Scarda and Maxwell Chu
2. U1200: Three-way tie among Serhat Salik, Brayden Zarefsky, and Darsh Maheshwari
3. U600: Ian Chan
4. U400: Awishkar Shrestha swept the section with a perfect score, 4-0!

The next scholastic tournament will be held on the last Sunday of the month on February 24th.

Registration for the ChessPalace Scholastic Tournament is now open.

Regional Scholastics are Back!

Are you ready for fall? Because the Regional scholastic series tournaments are back. They are going to be held on Sundays for three months: August 26, September 30, and October 28, 2018.

Each tournament is a stand-alone tournament, and players can register for any one, two, or all three of the tournaments.

Special Prize:

Chess players with a combined score total of 10 points or more from this tournament series, will win an entry to the American Open for any section in the Scholastic Tournament!

Sections, Time Control, & Entry Fees:

There will be 4 sections for each of the tournament in the Regional Scholastic Chess Series. These are:

a. K-12 Open
b. K-12 under 1100
c. K-6 under 600
d. K-6 under 400

Time control is 30 minutes with 5-seconds delay per player, per round, and the entry fee is $35 ($45 on-site) for each of the tournament in this series. Discounts are available for players signing up for more than one tournament at the same time.

Summer Scholastic Tournament

Ready for some fun in the sun? ChessPalace will be taking the Scholastic tournament to Santa Monica beach on Sunday, July 15, 2018.

There are five Sections:

Time Control: game 30 minutes.

Schedule: 4 rounds
10 AM, 11:15 AM, 1 PM, 2:15 PM

Chess sets are included. Bring notation booklets, pencils, and clocks if applicable. Come prepared with hats, caps, sunscreen, sunglasses, and drinking water.

Registration fee is $35. Register by July 7 to save $5.
