May Schedule of Events

We have many activities this month, including two Blitz tournaments and a Grandmaster lecture on the Catalan! Additionally, we are now taking registrations for the annual Chess Summer Camps which has half-day and full-day options. Discounts for full week registrations are available for chess club members and students.

Summer camp sessions will be the following weeks in June, July, and August (Mon-Fri schedules)

Here are the chess club’s events this May

A. Grandmaster Lecture on the Catalan! On Saturday, May 17 at 9:30 am, GM Batchuluun Tsegmed will lecture on the Catalan opening. Saturday tournament will follow at 11 am. (Please note: Lecture and Saturday Tournament will now be at a new location, 6803 International Ave. Unit 206, Cypress, CA 90630)

B. Saturday Open: Register for any or all of these weekly tournament on Saturdays and join other chess players for over-the-board RATED games. Check in at 10:30 AM. Round 1 at 11:00 AM. (Please note: Tournament will now be at a new location, 6803 International Ave. Unit 206, Cypress, CA 90630)

• May 24 (Memorial Day Weekend)

C. Blitz Tournament  Tuesday, May 13th and Friday, May 30 (Round 1 starts at 7 pm). These two Blitz tournaments will be US Chess rated, and the time control is 5 min with no delay! Registration is $15 (advance entry and online registration ends 2 hours before the start of the round), and will be $30 at the door. For ChessPalace members, entry is completely free!

D. Wednesday Knights: Four rounds, with one round played each Wednesday night on: May 7, 14, 21, and 28. Rounds starts at 7:00 pm. (Please note: Tournament will now be at a new location, 6803 International Ave. Unit 206, Cypress, CA 90630)

E. Amateur Tournament: For beginners of all ages, the tournament will be on Sunday, May 11 (Mother’s Day) Round 1 starts at 12 pm. (US Chess membership is not required.) Tournament will be non-rated. *Please note that this tournament is at SteelCraft Garden Grove*

F. Scholastic Tournament: Sunday, May 18 (Please note that this is the third Sunday of the month) -The scholastic tournament is for chess players in Grades K–12th. (US Chess Federation membership is required.) Round 1 starts at 9:30 am *Please note that this tournament is at a new location at 6803 International Ave. Unit 206, Cypress, CA 90630*

G. Casual Nights: Thursdays and Fridays – Free entry for chess club members/$10 for non-members. Play as many games as possible between the hours of 6 pm and 10 pm. Walk-ins welcome!
