The 2018 American Open will be on Thursday, November 22  to Sunday, November 25, 2018 at the same location as last year’s, the Hilton Hotel at Costa Mesa. Check back soon for details and to register.

Registration for the American Open 2017 is now open!

This year’s American Open will be held on November 23 – 26, 2017 at the Hilton Hotel at 3050 Bristol St. Costa Mesa, CA 92626.

Entry fee is $185 for the 4-day or 3 -day sections of the Main Tournament. If you register by August 31, 2017, you can save $35! Entry fee for the Early Bird registration is only $150. Sign up at .

You can also save on the Scholastic Entry Fees! Early bird entry fees for the scholastic section are:
Booster (Saturday, Nov. 25, 2017): $40
Junior Varsity (Sunday, Nov. 26, 2017): $50
Varsity (Saturday & Sunday, Nov. 25-26, 2017): $60

Remembering Yale Warsaw

yale ao 16 Yale Warsaw died of a heart attack on the morning of March 11th, 2017 at his home in San Fernando Valley. At 68 years old, he was a retired US Postal worker and avid chess player. Inducted to the Chess Palace Hall of Fame for his support, Yale is known for his generosity and welcoming nature. He frequented local shops and supported local businesses. Over the chessboard he is remembered as fierce and focused, sometimes playing younger opponents to exhaustion. Beyond the board, Yale will be remembered as a wonderful conversationalist and a great friend.

Dreaming King Champion 2017

MeeGabriel Mee went undefeated in the Dreaming King Championship U1700 section. In addition to the 140 rating points he earn over MLK weekend, his 1st prize winnings came with an $800 check! This 5th grader is getting a head start saving for his college tuition! He plans to share his best game from the tournament. Stay tuned for the date of this upcoming star’s debut!

Regionals I, August 2016

Four-way tie in the top section of the first Regionals on August 2016 were won by

Jeffrey Yang, Trung Phan, Albert Nguyen, and Ethan Aquino.
Batbuyan Injinash score perfect in K-12 U1300.
Alyssa Changkachith tops K-6.
Siddesh  Ganapathy goes undefeated in the K-3.
Daniel gets first in the unrated section.

Ethan Aquino clinched first at Summer Fiesta for the 4th time!

A total of 50 players competed under the sun. Between body builders at muscle beach and tourists on roller coaster rides, the chess park’s only rated scholastic tournament was held on July 10th this year. In a tough pool U1200 section produced a 3-way tie between Dalton Bateau, Injinash Batbuyan, and Richard Bo. In just as competitive group Teddy Cruz cleared first one round early. Adarsh Swaminathan won U400.
